While the first season of “Mad Men” wasn’t very popular, it was a hit among critics and at awards season in Here’s why “Mad Men” is one of the best shows ever, and the best to come out of television’s Golden Age:. And that’s not a bad thing. But especially at this point in television, twists and cliffhangers aren’t all that surprising or unique anymore.
The season-one twist that Don Draper was actually Dick Whitman was a big reveal, but the most shocking part was that the show didn’t make a big deal out of it. True to character, Don brushes off Pete Campbell’s discovery of his stolen identity, and so does their boss, Bert Cooper. This is a period drama that has won awards in the course of its seven seasons. The dapper and sharp Don Draper is seen wearing different popular watches of the era. The show progresses with Don gaining success in his advertising job, and so does his choice of accessories—watches that were popular during the portrayed eras. Mad Men also features other watches worn by other characters, but this one will solely focus on the models worn by Don Draper. This the watch is striking yet simple, establishing that Don is a man of good taste.
From its first episode, the show knew Don Draper could never change. It didn’t know how much its women would.
Leave it to Mad Men mastermind Matthew Weiner to throw his audience a ninth-inning curve ball by introducing a major character to his drama series in the final few episodes. The cosmic coincidence is not lost on Don, also a N. And in the first two episodes of the final Mad Men run, we watch as our hopelessly melancholy Mad Man is magnetically drawn to this similarly anguished waitress in a way that our handsome protagonist has never been drawn to a female character before.
He seeks her out so plainly—a seeming violation of the Don Draper Dating Discretion Code—that the dynamic between the two feels unprecedented and bizarre, especially given that this minimum-wage-netting brunette is more modest than most of his previous flames. Roger barely looks at her in her introductory restaurant scene. And Sylvia and Arnold mostly ignore her in the elevator.
The dreaminess of this character arc is augmented by sudden cuts between scenes—for instance, Don is suddenly dressed immaculately in a freshly-pressed suit when he greets Diana at the door late at night—even though he just spoke to her half-asleep while wearing pajamas.

Mad Men has a fantastic ensemble cast and because of that determining a true lead role isn’t the easiest. However, two characters very much dominate the show with their stories and that is Don Draper and Peggy Olson, who are certainly the main characters from the start to finish. While most people might automatically assume that Don is the lead role, simply because he gets the most screentime it isn’t actually that simple. Throughout the show, Peggy’s story becomes just as important and therefore an argument can certainly be made that Mad Men is actually all about her.
While Mad Men does highlight things going on in Peggy’s life, it goes nowhere near into the same detail as it does with Don Draper. His personal life is showcased incredibly close with lots of focus on his love life, his past, and his family. He brings a lot of other characters to the show from Betty and Megan to Sally and Bobby which is why he is the lead character of the show. Nobody else gets as much focus as Don outside of the working world and that’s due to him being the lead.
The key to any great lead character is that they change and develop over the course of the show. This is one way that Peggy is actually the lead character over Don because she does change. Where he arguably stays very similar, repeating the same mistakes continuously until he seeks help at the very end, Peggy does not.
